The Alexandria Area YMCA is seeking individuals to join our team as School’s Out Day Camp Counselors. This position provides an exciting opportunity to lead and engage with children in a fun and supportive environment during non-school days, including school holidays and breaks. Day Camp Counselors will be responsible overseeing a variety of activities that promote social, emotional, and physical development.

Essential Functions

  • Supervises and interacts with a group of children.
  • Implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.
  • Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness.
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
  • Cultivates positive relationships and maintains effective communication with parents, children and other staff.
  • Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Day Camp Leads and Day Camp Coordinator.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent experience; one year or more of college preferred.
  • Previous experience preferred working with children in a large group setting.
  • Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: outdoor living, camping, songs/music, skits, sports, aquatics, recreational games, etc.
  • At least 16 years of age.
  • CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire date.
  • Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.

  • Ability to lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.
  • Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions and supervise program activities in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor locations.
  • Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position, including walking, sitting on the ground, standing, bending, reaching, lifting, and swimming.

Pay

  • $14.50 - $15.50 per hour
