ENSURING WATER SAFETY
Earn your lifeguard certification at the Alexandria Area YMCA!
Successful completion of the course will provide participants with certification as a Red Cross lifeguard. The blended learning format combines approximately 7 hours of online learning with in-person skills sessions and the certification is valid for 2 years.

What you will learn:
- Knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies.
- How to help others stay safe in, on, and around the water.
- How to deliver critical care, like CPR, first aid, and AED administration
Course Requirements:
- Participants must be at least 15 years of age.
- Participants must complete a mandatory swimming test at the Alexandria Area YMCA, September 17 | 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. OR September 20 | 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
- Participants are required to wear a swimsuit and bring a towel to class
- Participants must complete all online training prior to the first day of class, attend all course sessions, demonstrate competency in all required skills and scenarios, and pass the final written & water exams to receive their certification.
Training Schedule:
- Friday, September 26 | 4:00 - 8:30 p.m.
- Saturday, September 27 | 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.
- Sunday, September 28 | 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.
*There must be at least 5 participants in the class to hold the session.
