Health & Wellness at the Alexandria Area YMCA means more than simply being physically active. It's about achieving a balanced spirit, mind, and body. The Y offers a large number of programs, ensuring there's something for everyone regardless of fitness level, age, or interest. Learn a new skill, foster new relationships, and achieve your goals!

Whatever your fitness goals are, the Alexandria Area YMCA has something for you. When you walk upstairs to our state-of-the-art fitness center, you will find:

Get your steps in all year long on the YMCA's 3-lane indoor walking track. 

Grow stronger with a variety of free weights including dumbbells, benches, and squat racks. 

Get your heart pumping on the brand-new cardio equipment including treadmills, ellipticals, stair climbers, and bikes. 

Blood Pressure Self Monitoring

Lower your blood pressure and reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke with the Alexandria Area YMCA’s Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring program. Over four months, participants track their blood pressure, receive expert guidance from YMCA Healthy Heart Ambassadors, and attend monthly nutrition seminars.

You can recognize an EnhanceFitness class by the relaxed atmosphere and the laughter in the room. A full hour of fun, EnhanceFitness focuses on dynamic cardiovascular exercise, strength training, balance, and flexibility — everything older adults need to maintain health and function as they age.

This program teaches children, ages 10-13, the proper use of fitness equipment and the walking track. This is required before use of the fitness center.

Wellness Orientations

This free program is designed for individuals new to health & wellness, need a re-introduction to fitness, or who are looking for guidance with their current fitness routine. Trained wellness coaches will tour members around the wellness center, and introduce them to basic cardio and strength training equipment.

Wellness Center Rules & Guidelines

Free-Weight Rules
  • Ages 13 & under are not permitted in the free-weight area.
  • Please only occupy one machine or station at a time.
  • Please wipe off equipment after each use.
  • Close-toed, activity-appropriate shoes are required. Lifting barefoot is not permitted.
  • Dropping weights is disruptive, can be dangerous, and is damaging to equipment.
  • Weightlifting chalk is not allowed.
General Wellness Center Guidelines
  • Please wipe off equipment after each use.
  • Please put weights and equipment away after use.
  • Please observe a courteous limit on cardio and strength machines during peak times.
  • Clean, close-toed shoes are required. No outside shoes permitted.
  • Youth, ages 9 and younger are only allowed access to the walking track and must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Teens, ages 10-13, must complete an orientation prior to using equipment in the wellness center.
  • Tank tops and shirts should cover the chest and midriff.
  • Shorts should be mid-thigh in length.
Group Exercise Rules
  • The studios are unavailable during scheduled classes or personal training sessions. Outside of these times, it is a shared space.
  • Members are not permitted to use sound or lighting equipment.
  • Please arrive on time to avoid disruption.
  • Please place all bags, coats, purses, etc. in a locker.
  • Disinfect and return all equipment after use.
  • Members ages 14 and older may participate in Group Exercise Classes.
