ENSURING WATER SAFETY

Earn your lifeguard certification at the Alexandria Area YMCA!

Successful completion of the course will provide participants with certification as an American Red Cross lifeguard. The blended learning format combines approximately 7 hours of online learning with in-person skills sessions, and the certification is valid for 2 years.

Next Certification Class: December 12-14, 2025 
*Unless we have enough interest to hold a class (minimum of 5)!*

What you will learn:
  • Knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies.
  • How to help others stay safe in, on, and around the water.
  • How to deliver critical care, like CPR, first aid, and AED administration
Course Requirements:
  • Participants must be at least 15 years of age.
  • Participants must complete a mandatory swimming test at the Alexandria Area YMCA, scheduled with the Aquatics Director by emailing sasuncion@alexandriaymca.com or calling us at 320-834-9622!
  • Participants are required to wear a swimsuit and bring a towel to class
  • Participants must complete all online training prior to the first day of class, attend all course sessions, demonstrate competency in all required skills and scenarios, and pass the final written & water exams to receive their certification.
Training Schedule:
  • Friday, December 12 | 4:00 - 8:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, December 13 | 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.
  • Sunday, December 14 | 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.
*There must be at least 5 participants in the class to hold the session.
